Honoring and reinterpreting the brand

Preserving key hallmarks of MCA’s brand was essential to this project. Bluecadet drew from the museum’s iconic architecture and brand elements, reinterpreting them as surprising yet functional features for the web experience.

Collections and artists, explored with ease

The museum’s collections and featured artists are the heart of the MCA. So, a top priority for the website was an intuitive, integrated exploration tool. The Collection Explorer improves discoverability through enhanced taxonomy and more robust search and filtering features. Dynamic content recirculation ensures that related artworks, artists, and exhibitions appear throughout the site, encouraging deeper exploration and unexpected connections.

Enticing visitors with intriguing art

We also introduced a dynamic “Art and Artists” page, placing creators and their works at the forefront. This curated section surfaces unexpected artwork to intrigue users and invite discovery. They can also search by keyword or artist, or choose from suggested terms that make searching more intuitive.

Content strategy for rich storytelling

Supporting the museum’s editorial and educational goals, we also created a flexible system of content patterns that allows for a range of layouts and rich, readable storytelling at any depth. These patterns balance text and visual media, and include quote callouts, generous negative space, and dramatic scale shifts to create a visually-engaging reading experience. The result is a design system that elevates the museum’s voice while giving authors the tools to present ideas with clarity, rhythm, and impact.

Intuitive navigation across devices

To ensure ease of use by all audiences, we carefully considered both navigation and the mobile experience. We introduced a robust yet approachable “mega menu,” positioned for predictable access and smooth interaction across devices. The result is a flexible, intuitive system that helps users find what they’re looking for, whether they’re planning a visit, exploring the collection, or discovering new ideas on the go.

The middle section highlights an exhibition titled "Gary Simmons: Public Enemy" alongside a curator's role description. The right section showcases "The D. Daskalopoulos Collection Gift" with an image of a sculptural artwork.
